How to Use Gmail to Defend Against Spam

Here is a little trick that I use to protect myself against spam, and to help catch website owners who sell out their user’s privacy.

To do this though you will need a Gmail account, don’t worry though because it’s from Google and it’s absolutely free.

Now I have a double opt-in email list, a privacy policy stating I won’t spam you or sell your information… but you’re probably thinking,”So what, you could still be some shady scam artist just waiting to sell our information!”

And you’d be partially correct, because there is no guarantee that a privacy policy will keep your information safe (but don’t worry I hate spam as much as the next guy and won’t contribute to the problem). A privacy policy offers you only limited protection, so here is how you can take matters into your own hands and catch those who sell your information.

So lets say you stumble across this dropshippingsuccess.com, you’re worried about giving your information because you don’t entirely trust that the site will keep it private. Here is what you can do.

Gmail allows you to add a “+” to your email address. I usually sign up for new websites like this: example+websitename @ gmail.com All mail will still end up in your personal email inbox. This is not creating a new email address, it will just allow you to better filter your incoming emails.

Here is an example…

Lets say your personal email address is example @ gmail.com

But instead of signing up for my email list with example @ gmail.com, sign up with:  example+dropshippingsuccess @ gmail.com

No matter what you sign up with the emails will be delivered to the same place.

So now what? What good does this do you might be thinking? Well for starters, if you notice that you are getting a bunch of spam emails you can check the details. If you don’t recognize the person or business that the email is coming from than all you need to do is check who the email address is being sent to, and you’ll be able to find out who is selling your info. So if you get some emails from some guy claiming to be a Nigerian prince, and he’s sending email to example+dropshippingsuccess @ gmail.com, you’ll know that I was the one who betrayed you. If you catch me ever doing this I give you full permission to bad mouth all over the internet, and I will proceed to hang my head in shame.

But what now, your email is still going to be flooded with junk right?

Nope, now all we need to do is set up some filters! Here’s how…

Step 1:
Login to your Gmail account and click the “labels” tab near the top of the screen, as can be seen in the picture below.

gmail

Step 2:
Select the “Manage Labels” option, as can be seen in the picture below.

gmail

Step 3:
Once there click on the “Filters” tab near the top and then select “Create a new filter” as can be seen below.

gmail

Step 4:
Enter in the email address that is getting spammed in the “To:” box, then click “next step”.

gmail

Step 5:
Check the “Delete it” option, and then create the filter.

gmail

Now it’s almost like the mistake of trusting your email address to the wrong never happened. It’s not perfect, and it does require a bit of leg work. Though it is well worth it to keep your inbox clean and clutter free, and to catch those who betray your trust.

Hope you can put this trick to good use, enjoy!

Keys To Amazon’s Success

Amazon.com is the largest retail website on the internet. So much so that nobody else even come’s close, having nearly three times as much revenue as second place Staples. Founded just 15 years ago they have a market cap of 52.81 billion, which already surpasses long standing giants like Target (market cap: 37.03B), and many other well known retail chains.

So the question is how did they get where they are today? What are some of the keys to their success, and more importantly how can we incorporate those things into our business? We can make reasonable arguements that it was their large investments in extra warehouses and fulfillment centers that allowed them to handle the busy holiday seasons, and undoubtedly that played a role. Since in our businesses we won’t be handling any inventory I thought we might take a closer look at some of the things they do on the front end that we can definitely emulate.

Here are two key areas that I believe have the greatest impact…

The first thing that I believe makes them so successful is their review system. They actively encourage people who have purchased from them to leave reviews. These instant testimonials tend to be quite honest, good or bad, and they play a huge part in whether the prospect will make a buying decision. I’m sure most of you like me have decided against buying a product after reading honest reviews of the product. Likewise we’ve probably all bought something after hearing about how great something was from a friend. Seeing positive reviews will put your mind at ease, which helps lower any resistance you might have in making a buying decision. This is a powerful tool that can significantly improve your sales… as long as your selling a quality products of course!

The next key to their sales success is the “Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought” section where they try and to cross sell you. How many people have bought an iPod and then immediately afterwards went ahead and bought the case for it? Or maybe after you decided to buy a car the salesman got you to upgrade for the leather seats, or maybe just after buying a bag of chips you decided to get the dip too. Most sales people will tell you that the easiest sale is the one that happens just after they make the first one. They are striking while the iron is hot. The reason this works is that a person’s actions tend to be consistent their previous action, at least in the short term. So if you get the prospect to make that initial buying decision, they are much more likely to continue to buy from you as long as what you’re trying to cross sell them pairs well with the previous item.

But how do you go about trying to incorporate these selling strategies into your store?

Well you should be able to find a web developer who can build these features into your webstore, or into a Yahoo store. The Shopify platform has a marketplace for apps that fully integrate with the site, such as ExpressRex Recommendation Engine (which mimics the “customers who bought X also bought Y” feature from Amazon), and then there is also the app called Grapevine which allows customers to rate and review products on your website.

Whatever platform you use to sell your product, it’s definitely worth taking a look to find out how you can incorporate these ideas into your store.
